My Story

Why Microgreens?

In January of 2025, I started growing microgreens. We had moved to Copperas Cove, TX in September and I finally felt somewhat settled. My love of plants and gardening led me to try microgreens. They are space-efficient and I felt that I could provide something that could help people. Because I also love designing websites, logos, etc, this was the perfect chance for me to combine two things I enjoy. Because of the size of my business (very small), I'm able to make every decision carefully and with my customers and my vision in mind.

I've been an organic gardener for most of my life, so starting with organic seeds and organic soil was non-negotiable for me. I found that True Leaf market had a great selection of organic microgreen seeds, and they also offer bulk sizes. So from the beginning, they have been my go-to seed source.

I didn't want to replace trays over and over, since that costs money and contributes to landfills. So I chose trays from Bootstrap Farmer, which are heavy-duty and extra-shallow, which is perfect for microgreens. I wash them in my bathtub with dish soap and water and reuse them. So far it is working well. (Although it does involve quite a bit of scrubbing.)

Another decision I made was to use clamshell containers that can be commercially composted. While not everyone has access to a commercial composting facility, I hope that they will decompose quickly in the landfill as well. I did consider recyclable containers, and used them initially, but I felt like compostable containers were more environmentally friendly since not everything we put in the recycling bin is able to be recycled. With that idea in mind, I also opted for compostable grocery bags, though I hope market shoppers will bring their own reusable bags when they can.

My first market was a tiny farmer's market in Killeen, where I sold maybe two containers of microgreens. Later, I tried out other markets and started doing better. I am still visiting new markets in different areas to see which farmer's market would be the best fit. But my ultimate goal would be to sell mainly online and go to farmer's markets occasionally. There is something really nice about talking to customers in person and hearing their stories. So I wouldn't want to give markets up completely, but they do take up a lot of time and work.

By delivering to local customers I also think I could serve more people, since not everyone goes to farmer's markets, and I can't be at every market.

Eventually, I hope that I can expand my business and grow my customer base so that growing and selling microgreens can become my full-time job. But that is still a long way off. For now, I just want to grow delicious, tasty microgreens and find new customers where I can! And I hope you'll be part of that!
